SEEKING SHELTER FROM INCARCERATION: HOW ARLINGTON COUNTY IS ADDRESSING THE HOMELESSNESS AND MENTAL HEALTH CRISES

WEDNESDAY, NOVEMBER 8, 2023

Homelessness, mental illness, and incarceration are deeply intertwined issues. In fact, individuals without stable housing are at greater risk for incarceration than the general population, mental health issues are prevalent among incarcerated populations, and many in our community face structural barriers to basic needs which result in disproportionate incarcerations.

The Arlington Committee of 100 discusses how the County is investing in coordinated systemic responses to assist people experiencing mental health or housing crises and the path forward. This program is a small chapter of the larger book on homelessness and mental health.

The Committee of 100 is looking at ways to expand this important discussion and amplify other issues in the homeless space. We encourage you to join us in that journey or allow us to support your efforts to lead future conversations for the community.

Thank you to our panel of County representatives for volunteering your time and expertise:

  • Nicole Dula, Housing Bureau Director, Arlington County Department of Human Services
  • Tiffany Jones, Marcus Alert Coordinator, Arlington County Department of Human Services
  • Michael Keen, Treatment on Wheels (TOW)/Projects for Assistance in Transition from Homelessness (PATH) and Mobile Outreach Support Team (MOST)
  • Steve Proud, Lieutenant, Arlington Police Department
